Gold Rallies Against Euro, High Yield Currencies on Risk-Positive Session Dollar Tumbles Into Weekend – A Sign of What’s to Come Monday?

Having worked so hard to finally overtake resistance that had capped bullish ambitions for an entire month, you’d think the dollar would have won some respite from the sentiment-based headwinds. That said, Friday ended with a sizable decline for the Dow Jones FXCM Dollar Index (ticker = USDollar) back below that closely-watched 10,190 level. Once again, we are reminded of the critical difference between a breakout and break with follow through. The immediate reversal from the greenback is perhaps a little more surprising given the initial move was supported by a general slide in risk trends. That said, when we are confronted with technical boundaries like the midpoint of the EURUSD’s historical range and the fact that there are few fundamental catalysts to actively drive capital towards safe havens that provide no (or even negative) yield, the lack of follow through becomes a little more comprehensible. Can we jump start a trend for the dollar – whether bullish or bearish?
If you were looking for fundamental cues from the fundamental event risk from the final 24 hours of this past week as guidance for where we will go heading forward, you may be disappointed. The Chinese 2Q GDP figures (setting the tone for global growth expectations amongst investors) printed below expected with a 7.6 percent annual pace of expansion – the weakest pace in three years but not enough of a surprise to stir concern. Closer to home, JPMorgan started the ball rolling for the US earnings season with a view into the closely-monitored financial market. A massive $4.4 billion loss via the CIO debacle didn’t seem to materially hamper adjusted earnings. As dubious as corporate earnings are (as a gauge for capital gains and yields for the equities market – the favored investment of retail trader), we cannot ignore it if the market is placated by the figures. The earnings season continues next week with Bank of American, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, Apple and Google amongst other notables. Watch it with a mind to how the masses read the numbers. Though it is difficult to see any, individual fundamental event as a potential catalyst to truly drive risk appetite forward; Fed Chairman Bernanke’s monetary policy report will always carry the possibility of an announcement of intentions for further stimulus. To what degree markets are still holding out hope (and thereby possibly be disappointed) remains to be seen.
Euro Faces Another Round of Disappointment, May Still Rebound
The euro has dropped sharply over the past two weeks, so a correction is not difficult to wrestle from overexposed bears. From a medium-to-long term fundamental perspective, uncertainty and lack of a solid safety net for another wave of Euro panic leaves the currency and region exposed. Yet, we have seen far too many instances were underwhelming or incomplete efforts have bought the euro time - whether through an easily soothed Euro market or simply an improvement in underlying sentiment is debatable. The media and analysts punched holes in the EU Summit’s vows almost immediately after they were issued, but that baton seems to have been dropped. In the upcoming week, we will nevertheless be reminded of the situation. On Wednesday, the EU will release a report on the public finances of the Euro Zone; but the bigger headline will be Friday’s Finance Ministers meeting, where they are supposed to finally agree on Spain’s rescue terms and potentially touch on Greece and the bigger terms of using the ESM to participate in the ongoing stability effort. Though it doesn’t draw much immediate market reaction, it is also worthwhile to keep an eye on important bond auctions. Spain, Greece and Portugal are all on deck to sell debt; and the rates that they draw (more than the aggregate demand, which can be national banks) reminds us of the market’s expectations.
British Pound Receives a Significant Boost from BoE Lending Details
Though it was somewhat lost in the general advance for most risk-based currencies, the sterling managed to rally against everyone of its major counterparts – safe havens, high yield carry currencies and euro alike. Clearly there was an additional fundamental factor, and that came from the Bank of England. The policy authority issued details on its lending program whereby banks can borrow T-Bills to use as collateral for loans. The program could boost credit as much as 80 billion sterling. Next week, keep an eye on the BoE minutes and jobs figures.
Australian Dollar Looks to Sentiment as its Yield Continues its Drop
Wherever risk trends head, the Australian dollar will inevitably follow (the AUDUSD’s 20-day rolling correlation to the S&P 500 is currently 0.89 percent). That said, there will be a question as to whether the Aussie shows greater sensitive to a rise or a fall in sentiment. The RBA has already delivered a string of cuts against heavy projects of easing. There would imply that there is some relief available from over-extended dovish forecasts, but the 12 month rate forecast is actually heading lower again (now calling for more than 100 bps of cuts again). Furthermore, the benchmark 10-year Australian government bond yield is at 5-week lows – very near the record low set in early June.
Canadian Dollar: BoC Rate Decision on Tap, Reminder of Loonie’s Unique Position
It seems that whenever there is a lull in serious calendar event risk, that the Canadian dollar steps in to fill the void with its own offerings. That will be the case in the coming week. On deck we have a few important readings. The Bank of Canada’s rate decision carries the most flash. Though they won’t alter policy, they will likely retain their neutral to hawkish lean that draws such a stark contrast to global counterparts (especially recently). The Monetary Policy report will follow shortly after along with an expected rebound in inflation pressures on Friday.
Swiss Franc: Bond Yields Plunge into Negative Territory, Will Investors Waver?
The yields on the short-end of the Swiss yield curve were already in negative territory, but the pressure significantly increased this past Friday. The 2-year note’s rate closed at -0.402 percent - a record low. Swiss authorities have repeatedly threatened negative interest rates as a further deterrent against an appreciating franc, but this is clearly not an option. That leaves a floor raise or capital curbs if they have to act.
Gold Rallies Against Euro, High Yield Currencies on Risk-Positive Session
A tumble for the US dollar is good enough reason for gold to find some traction, but to see the precious metal rally against higher yielding currencies is something else. For a risk-positive day, we would expect capital to move away from alternative stores of wealth and into something with higher (any) yield. Such a situation can often times be a sign that risk trends are flimsy and likely to fall apart.

Meeting summary Asia / Europe
Greek elections gave the surprising result of the victory of the New Democracy strong, with the rescue team to get enough votes to be able to form a coalition government with the rescue of the other major party, the PASOK. If this materializes, it will continue to fight the rescue party Syriza outside the main opposition party, but it is only likely to last long. Early reports indicate that PASOK will not form a coalition government without the inclusion of Syriza, whose leader Alexis Tsipras has already said his party will not join the new democracy in a "grand coalition" of all kinds.
In a bit of speculation on how this will develop the Greek drama, as a politician, Mr. Tsipras plays his cards right, because there seems to be in the game for the long term. So if Syriza had to win yesterday would have been only a very narrow margin, which would probably have deteriorated rapidly in case of Greece need another rescue under his command (it will be in about a month ). On the other hand, with a strong presence, Syriza is ready to get the majority support of a few months, when the Greeks return to the polls (assuming that the New Democracy and PASOK to form a government), the coalition of center will not do anything to change the material from the expected path of Greece outside the eurozone.
As a result of Greek elections were digested, it is now clear that the G-20 will not make the nuclear option to flood markets with hundreds of millions of dollars of liquidity to ensure price stability in the coming days. It was most of the reasons why the markets rallied in late last week, and without the promise of greater flexibility, most of the taste after the falling U.S. dollar has been stifled. This "rebound" to reality after the election has dragged on EURUSD from its highest level in three weeks back at 1.2600 1.2747 just before the U.S. equity cash open.
First, no smoothing along the way, investors have thrown in the mass Spanish debt, with the yield of the benchmark 10-year-emerges today 7.285% to 6.840 after the opening %. In the short end of the yield curve, the yield of 2-year Spanish note rose higher than 5.592%, its highest level since late November 2011.
Looking at European Credit, Italian debt is well under pressure, with 10-year notes containing 6.057% at the time of writing this report, after rising to 6.173% earlier in the day. The yield was over 10 years to 14 June, when it reached 6.342%. In the short end of the curve, Italian 2-year note rose 18.9 basis points give 4.522%.

?? European Investor Confidence Falls to 3-Year Low

04 June 2012 09: 02 GMT THE TAKEAWAY: Sentix investor confidence hits 3-year low, still better than expected-> European leaders continue to disagree over crisis fighting measures-> Euro sees slight bounce before today's trading
European investors' optimism for the Eurozone has reached a 3-year low according to a Sentix survey. The Sentix investor confidence for June came in at - 28.9, the lowest score since May 2009, but still better than analysts' expectations for a - 30.0 survey result. Back in March of this year, the survey reached a six month high at - 8.2, before the survey results declined for the next four straight months.
The Sentix survey reported a 3.5 point dip in investor confidence for the current situation to - 35.0, and expectations for the future also dropped over 5 points to - 22.5.
Eurozone worries weighed on economic sense as European leaders continued to disagree before the weekend on how to solve the debt crisis. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that she would not agree to joint debt issuance under any circumstances. US President Barak Obama joined the ECB, Italy, and France in pressuring Merkel to take further steps to control the crisis contagion.

After the close of a bearish month that saw a 7% decline for the euro against the dollar, the pair started June with a bounce back above 1.2400 from a fresh 2-year low below 1.2300 during Friday's trading.

$ EURUSD Falls 1.2770 Greek Government after does not form

may 15, 2012 13: 36 GMT  who said that the Greece was not relevant? After becoming a little later of actors of the market for first months of the year, the May 6 elections catapulted the Greece to the stage of the world for what appears to be the last act of the saga of the Greek sovereign debt. With the Centre, pro-bailout parties, conservative party new democracy and PASOK left party, lost power in fringe, anti-bailout parties, mainly, the extreme-left Syriza, have raised concerns that the Greece could end up leaving the euro. Last week, each major party, first new democracy, then Syriza and PASOK, were given mandates to form a coalition Government. Each failed, leading to the final meeting one today.
However, all built hope that Greek leaders may find common ground was displaced. The rhetoric left and right was standoffish, at least, with the left (Syriza) calling for a moratorium on the debt and the Centre (ND and PASOK) are demanding further austerity measures to receive additional subsidies in the Euro area. Today, the worst fears were realized, when the Greek leadership, announced that no coalition Government was formed in a last-ditch effort, and that new elections could come. It is a low development of the experience of the Euro, as this probably means that the anti-bailout, primarily the Syriza parties, will gather sufficient support to form a coalition on their own. This could result in Greece by default on its debt and leaving the euro entirely - a frightening prospect but objectively possible nevertheless.

Immediately after the news, the Euro has been violently in all, collapsing currency refuge, the Yen and the U.S. Dollar. In fact, against the later, we see that the EURUSD has fallen of 1.2841 for only 1.2770 in twenty minutes after the announcement. Although there was a small rebound, given the seriousness of the problems of the Euro area, it is likely that the continuous sale EURUSD should concerns hit the bond market (which they seem to be in Italian and Spanish yields note 2 years of climbing).

:: Sterling Falls as UK Trade Balance is Weakened by Euro Crisis

15 May 2012 09: 12 GMT THE TAKEAWAY: visible UK trade balance comes in worse than expected at - 8.56 billion pounds-> Lack of European demand for UK goods weakens trade balance-> Sterling falls
The UK visible trade deficit for March came in wider than expected at - 8.56 billion pounds, but still narrower than February's visible trade balance of - 8 billion pounds. February's deficit was revised lower from the previously thought - 8.77 billion, according to the Office for National Statistics. Trade balance to re-export narrowed to - 4.1 trillion pounds, better than the expected - 4.7 billon.
Import of goods from Europe was way up from 16.9 billion pounds to 17.6 trillion in March, while there was only a small rise in exports to Europe. Exports of goods to yield countries rose from 11.8 billion pounds to 13.2 billion. Therefore, the widening of trade deficit to Europe was offset by the narrowing of negative balance to re-export countries.
The euro-debt crisis has clearly curbed demand for British goods in Europe, which is the UK's biggest export market. As the pound continued to strengthen against the euro, as has been the trend over the past year, the trade deficit between the UK and Europe will continue to grow.
The lack of growth in European exports could be cited as one of the contributors to the fall in the first quarter UK GDP. Tomorrow, Bank of England Governor Mervyn King will hold a press conference to explain to the reason's behind the MPC's decision to not raise QE.

! Loonie Falls Despite Surge in April Housing Starts To Fastest Pace Since 2007

THE TAKEAWAY: [Canadian housing starts accelerated in April for fifth straight month to fastest pace since September 2007] > [Continuing strength in housing market] > [CAD weakens vs. USD]
Housing starts in Canada unexpectedly accelerated in April for the fifth straight month to its fastest pace since September 2007. The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation reported a large jump to 244,900 housing starts at a seasonally adjusted annual pace in April, while March’s figure was revised slightly downwards to 215,200 from 215,600 originally reported. The median forecast of 21 economists surveyed by Bloomberg News had called for a slowdown to 204,000 housing starts in April. New starts soared by 28.8 percent in April from a year ago, compared with March’s year-on-year rate of 16.7 percent.
The pickup in housing starts in April was led by a surge in multi-family homes in urban areas, which recorded a 27.4 percent gain to 158,500 new starts. Meanwhile, housing starts in rural areas contracted by 19.0 percent from a month ago, reversing the 10 percent gain in March.
April's housing starts data follows yesterday’s news that the number of residential building permits approved had declined by 1.3 percent in March. This could indicate that we may see slight moderation in the coming months in the recent strength shown by the Canadian housing market, in what some analysts think is a housing bubble.

Despite the stronger-than-expected print, the Canadian dollar tumbled against the U.S. dollar in the minutes following the data release. The loonie fell as much as 20 pips in the first 15 minutes from pre-announcement levels, and despite a slight retracement, continued to trade weaker at C$0.9972 against the greenback at the time of this report.

Copper gained 0.7% to $3.79, silver was up 0.5% to $31.49 while zinc gained over 1%. With a slow return of risk appetite and a reduction in demand for safe haven buying, USD/JPY reproached the ¥83 level. Bank of Japan (BoJ) Gov Shirakawa said that it will take time for impact of monetary easing to appear; Easing alone will not end deflation. Not appropriate to raise Japan's short term rates through US Fed style operations. EUR/USD was mostly unchanged at $1.3190. ECB President Draghi said he remains opposed to Eurobonds as they run counter to taxpayers' interests, its still too early to consider Eurobonds. Heading into the weekend we will see an election in Germany. Fed's Bullard sees 2012 GDP at 3%. He also noted that if inflation takes off, it will be difficult to contain and that gas will need to hit $5/gallon before we have to worry about inflation in the US. Over night Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) released their half year monetary and financial stability report. The report indicated that tight monetary conditions in China will directly impact onshore loan demand being at least partly diverted to Hong Kong. FOREX NEWS - Euro falls to 3-week low vs dollar on Greece delay

* Decision on Greek bailout off until at least Monday

* Traders unsure how Athens can redeem debt with no bailout

* Euro risks more falls; Dollar/yen hits 3-1/2 month high

* Swedish crown falls as central bank cuts rates

By Jessica Mortimer

LONDON, Feb 16 (Reuters) - The euro fell to a three-week low versus the dollar on Thursday as euro zone officials put off agreeing further aid for Greece, sparking fears of a chaotic default and leaving the euro vulnerable to more falls.

Frustrated by Greek political wrangling, euro zone finance ministers on Wednesday failed to reach agreement on a bailout package for Athens, delaying a decision on the matter until ministers meet on Monday.

Analysts said most in the market still expect Greece to avoid a disorderly default, and anything that shakes this conviction would trigger another wave of euro selling. The options market showed investors were increasingly looking to buy protection against further euro losses.

"The market is probably pricing in a better than evens probability that a near-term deal will be reached on Greece and avoid a messy default, which suggests there are more risks to the downside for the euro if there is no deal on Monday," said Adam Cole, global head of currency strategy at RBC.

The euro fell below psychologically key support and a reported options barrier at $1.30 to hit $1.2983, its weakest since Jan. 25, although technical analysts said support around $1.2965-75 may help stem losses. It was last down 0.6 percent at $1.2994.

Greece must repay 14.5 billion euros of debt on March 20, which it cannot do without the help of international aid. Analysts said failure to reach a deal on Monday could see the euro drop towards the mid-January low around $1.2624.

Risk reversals showed a jump in the premium charged to buy bets on the euro falling versus the dollar, with the one-month contract rising to 2.25 from 1.85 on Wednesday.

"There are no answers on how Greece will be treated ... If there is no resolution it poses risks for the euro," said Carl Hammer, chief currency strategist at SEB in Stockholm.

SEB have a forecast for the euro to fall to $1.25 by the end of the first quarter, but Hammer said it could reach this level sooner. A break below support around $1.29 would open up a move towards the lows hit in the middle of last month.

EU sources said the euro zone is examining ways of holding back parts or even all of Greece's second bailout funds while still avoiding a disorderly default next month.

Uncertainty over a bailout, and whether policymakers could hold back funds without triggering a messy default, stopped the euro benefiting from news that Greek party leaders have met the final two demands set by international lenders.

If the Greece situation is not contained fears will quickly grow that other highly indebted euro zone countries may follow.

DOLLAR FIRMS

Risk aversion due to the Greece worries buoyed the safe-haven U.S. dollar, with the dollar index hitting a three-week high of 80.078.

The U.S. currency also rose to a 3-1/2 month high of 78.83 yen, breaking above reported stop loss orders above 78.80 yen, although traders said option-related offers ahead of 79 yen may cap gains.

The dollar was lifted versus the yen after a firm break above its 200-day moving average this week, though some analysts cautioned that it was premature to say whether there would be further gains in the dollar.

The minutes of the Federal Reserve's January policy meeting showed a few officials believed another round of quantitative easing, which is typically negative for the dollar, would be needed to support the U.S. economy.

The euro was steady against the yen at 102.45 yen , unable to clear important resistance including the 90-day average at 102.74 and Ichimoku cloud top at 102.79.

Elsewhere, the Swedish crown fell against the euro after the Swedish central bank cut interest rates by 25 basis points to 1.50 percent.

The Australian dollar was down 0.3 percent at $1.0665 , failing to benefit from strong Australian employment data as doubts over a Greek bailout undermined risky assets.

FOREX MEWS - Yen falls on BoJ easing; euro cushioned by ZEW survey

* BOJ to boost asset buys by Y10 trln, to buy long-term JGBs
* Analysts say impact on dlr/yen may prove fleeting
* Moody's puts UK, France, Austria on negative outlook
* German ZEW survey eases pressure on euro
By Neal Armstrong
LONDON, Feb 14 (Reuters) - The yen fell on Tuesday as the Bank of Japan eased monetary policy by expanding its asset-buying scheme, but the impact on the currency may prove short-lived while nagging worries over the euro zone crisis keep it supported as a safe haven.
The BOJ boosted its asset buying and lending scheme by 10 trillion yen ($130 billion), to 65 trillion yen, with the entire increase to be used for purchases of long-term Japanese government bonds (JGBs).
The dollar rose to a near three-week high of 78.19 yen on trading platform EBS with gains of around 0.6 percent on the day. The euro rose 0.7 percent on the day to 103.10 yen .
"The knee-jerk reaction has been to sell the yen and that's understandable with the BoJ being a bit more active than it has been in the past," said Lee Hardman, currency strategist at BTM-UFJ.
"This certainly reinforces the recent yen-weakening trend but that trend rests on broader financial market stability remaining in place. There are still risks of a disorderly outcome in Greece which would derail current yen weakness," he added.
A rally in global equity markets this year has helped to weaken the low-yielding yen which tends to fall when risk sentiment improves. In such an environment investors typically use it as a funding currency to finance investments in higher-yielding alternatives.
One key topside level for dollar/yen in the near term lies near 78.29 yen, around its late January high and a peak hit in late November.
The dollar probed above its 200-day moving average at 78.05. A daily close above there for the first time since 2011 would be a clear positive sign. Support was back at the top of the daily Ichimoku cloud around 77.43.
"We think dollar/yen will struggle to get through the 80 yen area which has capped recent moves higher," said Lauren Rosborough, senior currency strategist at Societe Generale.
"Although the BoJ has announced another expansion, when put into context it is catching up with easing measures taken in the U.S.," she added.

The euro pared earlier losses against the dollar and hit a high of $1.3216 on EBS after a German survey of economic sentiment rose this month, defying expectations for a fall and adding to signs that the German economy is holding up in the face of the euro zone crisis.
The euro had fallen to session lows of $1.3127 after rating agency Moody's said it may cut its triple-A ratings of France, Britain and Austria while it downgraded six other European nations, including Italy.
Moody's move on euro zone sovereign ratings follows action by Standard & Poor's last month, when France and Austria lost their triple-A status while Italy, Spain, Portugal, Cyprus, Malta, Slovakia and Slovenia were downgraded.
"Anyone observing the markets had to expect further rating agency downgrades and in the end Moody's only followed S&P's previous step," said Commerzbank analysts in a note.
The euro had been down about a cent from the previous day's high on worries about the remaining hurdles Greece faces in its bid to avoid a disorderly default.
The European Union has given the fragile ruling coalition of Prime Minister Lucas Papademos until Wednesday, when euro zone finance ministers are expected to meet, to specify how 325 million euros of the 3.3 billion euros demanded in budget savings will be achieved.
By the same deadline, Greek political leaders must give a written commitment to implement the terms of the deal.
"The market is dominated by Wednesday's Eurogroup meeting and there is still huge tail risk for the euro," said Rosborough.

FOREX NEWS - Euro falls vs dlr on profit-taking; Greek talks eyed

* Euro retreats from two-week high as investors book profit

* On track for biggest weekly rise in three-months, $1.30 eyed

* Cautious optimism on Greek debt swap talks

By Nia Williams

LONDON, Jan 20 (Reuters) - The euro retreated from a two-week high against the dollar on Friday as some investors took profits on a short-covering rally but cautious hopes Greece may be nearing a deal to avoid a chaotic debt default looked set to offer support.

The single currency was last down 0.3 percent at $1.2920, falling back from a peak of $1.2986 hit in early London trade, but holding well above the 17-month low of $1.2624 reached last week.

So far this week the euro has gained more than 2 percent, putting it on track for the biggest weekly rise since October after solid bond auctions in Spain and France on Thursday boosted risk appetite.

Analysts said it was normal to see profit-taking after such a strong rally and the euro was likely to stay supported in the short-term as investors await the outcome of the Greek talks.

Greece and its private bondholders resume negotiations on Friday amid signs they are inching closer to a deal that will pave the way for a fresh injection of aid before 14.5 billion euros of bond redemptions fall due in March.

A positive outcome to the talks could boost the euro, while any negative news could see investors re-establish bearish bets.

"This is just profit-taking - we pretty much had a straight-line rally since Monday morning. We could see another 40-odd points on the downside but I think we will hold between $1.2860 to $1.30," said Geoff Kendrick, FX strategist at Nomura.

"Because the outcome (of the talks) is so binary, market sentiment tends to go one way or the other. We certainly see it as more risk-on at the moment."

Investors stacked up bets against the euro after ratings agency Standard & Poor's downgraded nine euro zone countries including France and Austria last week.

Since then sentiment has improved, and some market players said the unwinding of those positions may give the euro a further lift in the near-term, pushing it through reported offers around $1.30, although further gains could be difficult.

"This is not only about Greece. We have definitely had a risk-on move and we know there are a lot of euro/dollar shorts in the market. I expect we will breach $1.30 today but run out of steam if the rally goes much higher," said Lutz Karpowitz, currency analyst at Commerzbank.

Against the yen, the euro was down 0.3 percent at 99.70, having rebounded since hitting an 11-year low of 97.04 yen on Jan. 16.

Aside from the risk of a messy Greek default, market players still see downside risks to the euro in coming months, due to concerns that the euro zone economy may slip into recession and limit progress toward fiscal consolidation in the region.

SLUGGISH CHINA MANUFACTURING

The euro and the risk-sensitive Australian dollar took in their stride a survey showing China's manufacturers started 2012 in a sluggish mode.

The HSBC flash manufacturing purchasing managers index (PMI), the earliest indicator of China's industrial activity, stood at 48.8 in January, below the 50 level that demarcates expansion from contraction.

The reading was the highest in three months, however, and was a slight improvement on the 48.7 final figure for the December index.

The Australian dollar eased 0.1 percent to $1.0405, hovering near an 11-week high of $1.0450 hit earlier this week.

The dollar edged higher versus a basket of currencies to 80.382, moving away from a two-week low of 79.99 hit earlier in the session.

Against the yen, the dollar rose 0.1 percent at 77.18 yen , hovering near the top end of the 76.30 yen to 77.342 yen range seen so far in January.
